Quick verdict: which should a founder try?
These are editorial starting points based on documented workflows. We have not built the same app in all three or measured a quality winner.
| Start here if… | You want a guided web-app path Consider Lovable for a browser-based product you can describe, refine and hand off through GitHub. [1][3] | You want a builder with code access Consider Bolt when you want app generation alongside a portable GitHub project. [5][6] | You want building and operations together Consider Replit when your app needs a development workspace, publishing options and runtime visibility. [8] |
| Main trade-off | Building and running share a budget Plan for app traffic and user-facing AI as well as builder messages. [1] | Bigger projects consume more tokens The pricing FAQ links message consumption to how much project context the AI processes. [4] | Paid work and hosting add usage costs A subscription does not make every Agent action or cloud service free. [9] |
| Before choosing | Try one complete user journey A good-looking screen is only part of an app; verify saving, permissions and errors. | Check changes as well as first drafts Ask for a second feature and a bug fix before committing to a workflow. | Check the live app and its bill Verify that publishing, databases and repeated edits fit your budget. |
Building, publishing & handoff
| Build approach | Describe a web product Lovable presents a chat-driven workflow for websites and web apps. [1] | Generate and maintain a project GitHub integration keeps the generated project available for version control and handoff. [5] | Agent inside a cloud workspace Core documents Agent chat, planning, paid modes and multiple artifact types. [8] |
| Publishing | Managed Cloud Published apps can use Lovable hosting; running costs draw on grants and credits. [1] | Hosting included with limits The pricing page lists hosting and request allowances; custom domains are on Pro. [4] | Several publishing options Core allows unlimited published apps; select the runtime option for your workload. [8] |
| Source-code portability | GitHub sync Keep a repository copy and review the documented sync workflow before handoff. [3] | GitHub integration Use version control to retain project history outside the builder. [5] | Git and GitHub The workspace supports repository-based version control. [10] |
| Ownership vs migration | Ownership is documented Lovable says users own their code and projects, subject to third-party rights. Moving the backend still requires planning. [1][3] | Code handoff is supported Bolt explains ownership and repository handoff; transfer service accounts and domains separately. [6] | Plan a reproducible handoff A GitHub repository is useful, but runtime configuration, data and external services also need a migration plan. [10] |
| Technical help needed? | For launch-critical checks Budget for someone to inspect permissions, payments and data handling before real customers use the app. | For debugging and handoff Code access helps a developer take over; it does not establish that generated code is correct. | For operating a growing product Publishing tools reduce setup work; monitor errors and resource use as traffic grows. |
Pricing, allowances & the real launch budget
US-dollar reference prices are for monthly billing where stated. Taxes, regional checkout prices and promotions can differ. Credits, tokens and dollar balances are different units.
| Free starting point | Limited build grants The pricing FAQ lists 5 build credits daily, capped at 30 monthly, plus separate Cloud and app-AI grants. [1] | Limited token allowance Free lists 300,000 tokens daily and 1 million monthly, with Bolt branding. [4] | Starter with caps Core documentation lists daily-cap Agent access and one published app on Starter; check its expiry conditions. [8] |
| Representative paid plan | Pro: US$25/month The 100-credit Pro tier is US$25 with monthly billing; annual billing is a separate commitment. [2] | Pro: US$25/month Monthly Pro starts at 10 million tokens; larger allowances change the bill. [4] | Core: $20/month displayed The live monthly selector shows $20 and a $20 usage allowance. Confirm checkout currency and taxes before paying. [7] |
| What the allowance buys | Build, Cloud and app AI Current plans use credits across these services. Consumption depends on mode, task and plan. [1][2] | AI builder tokens Tokens measure the builder context and output, not a guaranteed number of completed features. [4] | Paid Agent and cloud services Credits cover eligible Agent work, published apps, storage and databases. Free Mode has its own allowance. [9] |
| How costs can grow | More edits or live-app usage Include top-ups and ongoing service consumption in the operating budget. [1][2] | Context and traffic Allow for repeated builds and the hosting request limits in your selected tier. [4] | Complex paid tasks and runtime use Effort-based actions and third-party services can consume credits beyond the subscription. [9] |
| Spend-control check | Inspect the balance Check plan-specific grants and top-up choices before assuming a monthly fee caps total spending. [2] | Track token usage Budget for project growth; a token allowance is not a promise of unlimited revisions. [4] | Set budgets and alerts Replit documents hard budget limits, alerts and the usage dashboard; usage reporting can lag. [9] |
Make the choice practical
A booking-app trial with a clear finish line
Suggested test, not a completed benchmark: ask each builder for the same appointment-booking app with a service list, available slots, customer form and owner dashboard. Use test data. Check that two customers cannot book the same slot, saved bookings survive a reload, and customers cannot open the owner dashboard. Then request a cancellation feature and publish a test version. Record all charges, failed attempts, fixes and developer help. Compare the total cost of reaching this finish line rather than the appearance of the first screen.
Frequently asked questions
Which is best for a non-technical founder?
Use the quick-verdict row to choose a starting point, then complete the booking-app trial. We cannot rank ease or output quality without a controlled hands-on test. A working user journey and a manageable operating bill are better evidence than a polished first draft.
Is the monthly subscription the entire app cost?
No. Include builder usage, hosting, databases, domains, external APIs and any developer assistance. The units and included grants differ, so matching monthly subscription prices do not imply equal capacity.
Can I move the app later?
All three document GitHub-related workflows. Moving source code is only one part of moving a product: retain data exports, runtime settings and ownership of domains and third-party accounts. Check the actual handoff path before paying annually.
