Conversational image briefs

ChatGPT

Free; Plus $20/month
Plus billed monthly; API charged separately

Consider ChatGPT when it is easier to explain a visual in ordinary language. Keep the brief specific: subject, composition, intended use and the change you want next.

Know the limitation

Free image creation has its own usage limit. OpenAI does not promise a fixed daily image count in its Free Tier FAQ. Plus increases access but should not be treated as unlimited image generation.

Dedicated visual exploration

Midjourney

$10/month
Basic · monthly; $8/month billed yearly ($96/year)

Shortlist Midjourney when you want a dedicated environment for exploring visual concepts. Basic provides an entry subscription; Standard and higher add unlimited image generation in the slower Relax mode.

Know the limitation

Basic includes a limited Fast GPU allowance, not unlimited images. Private generation through Stealth Mode requires Pro or Mega. Review the applicable plan and usage terms before making confidential client assets.

Adobe creative workflows

Adobe Firefly

Standard $9.99/month
US individual plan · monthly

Consider Firefly if you want to generate and edit visuals within Adobe’s creative ecosystem. Compare the features you actually use against the plan, rather than choosing on the credit number alone.

Know the limitation

Standard lists 2,000 monthly generative credits. A credit is not one finished image, and premium or partner-model usage can differ. Limited-time “unlimited” offers apply to specified plans, models and periods.

Designs with lettering

Ideogram

Free; Plus $20/month
Plus monthly; $15/month billed yearly ($180/year)

Include Ideogram when exploring posters and other designs that combine a visual with text. Its platform offers editable text workflows; check every letter yourself before using a finished design.

Know the limitation

The free weekly allowance varies by account. Plus includes 1,000 priority credits a month and a slow queue, but AI editing needs priority credits. Free generation is public; check privacy settings before uploading sensitive material.

A practical starting point

Make your first comparison useful.

A focused task helps you judge fit before you commit to a subscription.

  1. Write the same small brief. Try a fictional coffee-shop poster: one cup, a plain background, room for a headline and a specified shape. Use the same brief in your shortlisted tools.
  2. Check what needs fixing. Look at lettering, edges, object shapes and consistency. Request one change at a time. We have not generated or scored sample outputs for this comparison.
  3. Inspect the actual download. Check dimensions and file format in your editor. Confirm the plan’s privacy and usage terms, plus any extra charge for editing or upscaling, before choosing.

Common questions

Before you sign up

Which image generator is best for beginners?

Our starting suggestion is ChatGPT for a conversational brief. Midjourney offers a dedicated creative environment, Firefly fits an Adobe workflow, and Ideogram is worth considering for lettering-led designs. Choose by the task; we have not run a controlled image-quality benchmark.

Which options can I try for free?

ChatGPT has limited free image creation, Adobe offers limited free access, and eligible Ideogram accounts receive a variable weekly allowance. Midjourney’s web service requires a subscription. See our separate free-image guide for a comparison focused on allowances.

Are generated images private?

Check the plan and settings before uploading or generating. Midjourney reserves Stealth Mode for Pro and Mega; Ideogram offers private generation on paid plans. Do not assume a paid entry plan includes every privacy feature.

Can I use the images for my business?

Check the current terms for your selected plan, model and intended use. Also review any material you upload and any logos or identifiable people in the result. The source links beside each tool are a starting point for checking its requirements.

Does a larger credit allowance mean more usable images?

Not necessarily. Models, image settings and editing operations can consume different amounts. Compare the cost of completing your actual task, including revisions and exports, rather than treating credits from different services as interchangeable.
