Quick answer
Consider GitHub Copilot if keeping VS Code and GitHub workflows matters most, Zed if you want a different editor with external-agent and model-key options, or Aider if you prefer working from a terminal with Git. Compare a real repository task before switching: editor compatibility, model costs and review effort matter as much as a subscription price.
Why consider alternatives to Cursor?
- You want AI assistance in the editor and repository workflow your team already uses.
- You want more control over the model connection or whether a task uses a local model.
- Your agent usage makes the final bill hard to predict, or you want to compare a seat subscription with separate model usage.
Best for your task
VS Code and GitHub workflows
GitHub Copilot
It provides an alternative route to coding assistance without making a new standalone editor the centre of the decision.
Tradeoff: Price the agent workflow you actually use. The advertised subscription and included AI-credit allowance are different numbers.

Zed
Its external-agent and model-key support makes it a candidate when you want to choose the editing interface and model connection separately.
Tradeoff: Check extension and language-tool compatibility. Bringing your own keys moves model costs to a provider; it does not remove those costs.
Official product details ↗Terminal and Git workflows
Aider
It works with an existing codebase and can connect to cloud or local models, making it worth evaluating when terminal operation is a deliberate preference.
Tradeoff: Local-model use needs suitable hardware and configuration. Do not describe every setup as private: cloud-model connections still send data to that provider.

For teams, test repository access, review controls and billing together. For budget use, measure the cost of one finished task including retries. For privacy-sensitive work, verify the actual model endpoint and data settings. None of these choices makes unreviewed autonomous changes safe to merge.

Pricing comparison
Checked 1 October 2026. Prices are the amounts displayed on the linked vendor pages, before any applicable tax unless stated there. Confirm your currency, billing cycle, allowances and renewal price before paying.
| Tool | Price and access | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Cursor | Hobby is free. The pricing page lists individual Pro at $20/month and Teams from $40/user/month. Check official details ↗ | Compare included agent usage and additional charges, not just the seat price. |
| GitHub Copilot | Free tier; Pro $10/month, Pro+ $39/month and Max $100/month on the individual plan page. Check official details ↗ | Chat and agent features consume AI credits; included flex allotments can change. |
| Zed | Personal is free. Pro is $10/month with $5 in tokens; further hosted usage is billed separately. Check official details ↗ | Bring-your-own-key usage is billed by your provider; a free editor does not mean free inference. |
| Aider | Model usage is separate: check the provider’s API charges, or the hardware requirements for a local model. Check official details ↗ | Requires technical setup and model selection; it is not a managed replacement for every editor feature. |
When Cursor is still the better choice
Keep Cursor if its editor and agent workflow already fit your repository and the included usage matches your workload. Moving to a cheaper seat can be a false saving if it adds migration work, extra model bills or longer code review.

- Pick one small bug with an existing test and use a temporary branch.
- Ask each candidate for the same change, then inspect the diff and run the same tests.
- Record the total model cost, manual corrections and extension gaps before changing your team's default.

This is a documentation-based comparison prepared with AI assistance and checked against the official sources below. We have not run a hands-on benchmark. “Best for” means a workflow worth evaluating, not a measured quality ranking or a guarantee of results.
We selected these alternatives for the specific tasks described above, checked their current catalogue availability, and compared documented capabilities and plan conditions. Search demand was not measured for this guide. Product names, plan limits and prices can change.
