Before you create

Choose the right fit

Generated scenes

Pika

For short creative clips

View tool profile →

Our starting pick for experimenting regularly with short scenes. Basic includes monthly credits, so you can return for another round of ideas.

The free-plan catch

The free Pika 2.5 option is 480p. Its pricing page lists watermark-free downloads, while the FAQ reserves these for higher plans. Check an actual export before relying on it for a project.

Generated scenes

Runway

For a first generation experiment

View tool profile →

A useful introduction to a generative video workflow. Spend the starter allowance on a small experiment before deciding whether a subscription fits.

The free-plan catch

Free credits do not renew, although unused credits do not expire. Free videos carry a watermark and available models can change. This is a trial-sized allowance, not an ongoing free production budget.

Presenter / avatar

HeyGen

For an avatar-led explainer

View tool profile →

Choose this when you want a presenter speaking a script. That is a different job from generating cinematic scenes or animating a reference image.

The free-plan catch

Current help lists a region-dependent quota and a 720p sharing link; it separately lists 3 Video Agent videos per month. Do not assume that free sharing includes a downloadable file. Confirm the export options in your account.

Image and video workflow

Leonardo.Ai

For an image-to-video experiment

View tool profile →

Consider this for animating an image generated inside Leonardo. Your daily allowance is one shared budget for image and video creation.

The free-plan catch

Only selected video models are free, and free videos carry a watermark. Uploading your own image requires a paid plan. Check the generation cost: 150 tokens does not mean 150 videos. Free creations are public; see the linked usage rights before commercial work.

Make your first attempt count

Run a small test before you commit

Use the same simple brief when comparing tools for the same job. A flashy demo is less useful than an output you can actually use.

  1. Keep the idea small. Try one short scene, or a two-sentence avatar script. Check the credit cost before generating.
  2. Inspect the result. Look for unwanted movement, distorted details, unreadable text, and distracting voice or lip-sync errors.
  3. Check the delivery. Open the download or sharing link on your phone. Confirm resolution, watermark, and whether you can use it in your editor.
Example scene brief

“A ceramic coffee cup on a wooden desk. Morning light from the left. Steam rises gently. The camera stays still.”

A prompt to try, not a sample we generated or tested.

Common questions

Before you sign up

Should I choose text-to-video or image-to-video?

Text-to-video starts from a written scene description. Image-to-video starts from a still image and adds motion. If keeping a particular subject or composition matters, try an image-based workflow with a reference you have permission to use. Availability depends on the selected model and plan.

Will the free video include sound?

Do not assume a generated clip includes sound, dialogue or captions. Check the selected model before using credits. A presenter video, a silent scene, and a complete edited video are different outputs; compare tools against the output you actually need.

Which free AI video generator should I try first?

For a short generated scene, start with Pika and a simple prompt. For a presenter reading your script, start with HeyGen. Runway is another option if a one-time credit allowance is enough. These are workflow recommendations, not a ranking of tested video quality.

Can I make unlimited AI videos for free?

None of the options in this shortlist offers unlimited free video generation. Check whether your allowance renews, how much each attempt costs, and whether retries consume more of it.

Can I download a free video without a watermark?

Read the export notes above before choosing. Pika’s pricing and FAQ differ on this point; Runway and HeyGen watermark free videos. Generate and inspect one export before spending the rest of your allowance.

Can I use the results for my business?

Check the current licence for your plan, plus rights to uploaded images, faces, voices, music, and logos. A free account or a watermark-free export alone does not establish permission for every commercial use.
